Being insatiably curious is a good way to end up dead.

Rain Christiansen, cold-case detective and reluctant medium, is very aware of that fact. But when infamous serial killer Thomas Kane wants to meet, there’s no way Rain can say no. He also can’t refuse Kane’s offer—find his missing wife, Delilah, and he’ll reveal the location of his victim’s bodies.

Rain has never turned down a good quid pro quo, and he doesn’t intend to start.

The hunt for Kane’s wife leads to yet another cold case, three
copycat murders, and an investigation where nothing is as it seems. Soon, Rain is dealing with a ghost unlike any he’s ever dealt with before…a ghost capable of doing things he shouldn’t be able to do. How can Rain control something he doesn’t even understand? And what will he do when the unknown threatens the safety of the most important
person in his life?

Rain is starting to realize that he can only battle the supernatural with the supernatural, and that is spooky business indeed.

What I Liked

The banter. Oh, the banter. The prior two also had the banter in it not just between Rain and Danny, but also between members of the team, other family members, and even suspects. I will say however, I think if you watch the evolution of it through the series between Rain and Danny, it is a clear indication that their second chance relationship was becoming deeper and deeper.

The mystery storyline of the book was well developed and had a number of twists and turns. A few surprises along the well threw me for a loop in the process. Admittedly, at one point I was surprised that the case was solved…but I was far from the end of the book. Don’t worry, the story continues and you will not be bored. Sorry, I am trying hard to avoid spoilers in a very action-packed book.

OK, I would be remiss not to mention the sexual component. YEP, she knocked that out of the park as well. I liked the fact that the sex was part of the normal course of romance, well, deepening romance. It was not sex for the sake of sex.

Besides Rain & Danny, I also liked Dakota….he popped up in book two, Principles of Spookology, and remained in the same role here. He is my favorite secondary character. I am hopeful that Ms. Harmon will do a spin-off with him soon into his own novel/series…. (wink wink, hint hint).

THIS IS A HAPPILY EVER AFTER BOOK….well as happily ever after as it can be with ghosts that come and go at any time.

What I did not Care for

There was not anything that jumped at my reading that I found to be overdone or did not fit. I personally did not understand the real reason the ghost did not want to leave, other than just being stubborn. But with that, I have met my share of stubborn people in my life, so I get it from that angle. Overall, that did not take away from the story for me 🙂

My Recommendation

I am not even going to hide it…I was hooked in the first couple of pages. Previously, I have read the other two books in the Spectral Files. When Ms. Harmon emailed me about 10 days ago to see if I would be interested in reading the advance copy, my response was “Yes Please, Yes Please, Yes Please”. I was glad to see that the book was not just hyped up in my mind….it delivered!

About the Author of Spooky Business: S.E. Harmon

Puppy pic for SE Harmon author of Spooky Business

S.E. Harmon has had a lifelong love affair with writing.  It’s been both wonderful and rocky (they’ve divorced several times), but they always manage to come back together.

She’s a native Floridian with a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Fine Arts, and used to spend her time writing educational grants.  She now splits her days between voraciously reading romance novels and squirreling away someplace to write them.  Her current beta reader is a nosy American Eskimo who begrudgingly accepts payment in the form of dog biscuits.

Coffee Talk with S.E. Harmon

As many of you know, I have a bit of a coffee addiction.   This has developed into a little bit of a sub-theme to my site (BookGemz).  I say it is being a father of three wonderful kiddos, BUT, it is more likely because I can never seem to set my book down to go to sleep once I am engrossed into it.

Ice Coffee! SE Harmon

However, I have a small tradition of reaching out to the authors to connect on their favorite caffeinated beverages and other little tidbits.   Ms. Harmon was gracious in responding to my inquiry!!

When I asked the question she responded: “Ooo, your coffee question is meant for me.” So immediately, I felt like a kindred spirit (did I mention I was from Florida as well?).

She has a large decaf iced coffee with Splenda and skim milk “Every. Day. Of. My. Life.” Evening noting, that she can not write without it. “I knew I had a problem when I pulled through the Dunkin drive-thru one day, and the woman on the speaker said “Hi, Sylvia!”
