Acsquidentally in Love
By K.L. Heirs
Book 1 of the Sucker for Love Mysteries series
Nothing brings two men – or one man and an ancient god – together like revenge.
The Storyline: Acsqidentally in Love, an interesting new gay romance novel.
Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers… not that he’s ever gotten a response.
Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with.
Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith… and a lot of mystical firepower.

This was my first book by Ms. Heirs. I was not sure what to expect, never even heard of tentacles as a genre, but love M/M Paranormal Romance as well as a murder mysteries, so I gave it a try. Well, I was not disappointed, to say the least!
This is a very interesting tale that K.L. Hiers spins. She created a whole new religious pantheon in this novel, complete with its own gods, festivals, and a version of their afterlife. There is even a storyline about how the religion has fallen from favor and a more dominant one has arisen. This was some incredible world-building, without it overpowering the whole story.
The mystery piece had just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting, without being too taxing for an enjoyable read. The characters were charming and well developed. My personal favorite was Sloan, the detective, but admittedly, I found “Loch” endearing despite his antics.
OK…..this was my first tentacle book. As I mentioned, I had NO CLUE that was even a thing. Admittedly, it was pretty hot. There is one larger romantic scene around halfway through the book, that I would say left little to the imagination when it comes to tentacle love. Ultimately, the book was more than just sex, but it definitely did not take away for it!
In the end, this is on my RECOMMEND list! I am looking forward to the next book in the series…..hopefully not too far down the road.
Interview with K.L. Heirs
Book Gemz: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your writing?
K.L. Hiers: My name is K.L. “Kat” Hiers, and I’ve been writing for over twenty years. My first published book just came out last August, but I wrote my very first book ever when I was eight years old. It was a silly little fantasy about a little girl who travelled to a magical world of unicorns and goblins, and I was absolutely hooked on storytelling after that. I wrote mostly fantasy in my youth, but now I write gay romance and erotica.
Book Gemz: OK, Kat, can you tell us about your new release? What inspired you to write it? (oops, I asked two questions at once again…sorry)
Kat: Absolutely! Acsquidentally In Love is a paranormal romance about a young private investigator that falls in love with an ancient tentacle god. It started as a smutty birthday present for a good friend who wanted some tentacle porn. It was only a few thousand words, but oh, I was instantly addicted. I was very aware of tentacle shenanigans, had enjoyed reading them, but I’d never written it before. After I was done, I knew I had to figure out a way to write more.
I didn’t want to write senseless tentacle sex because although it’s super fun, I needed some plot in a very bad way. That’s what led to me creating a new religion for this series. I had to have some sort of foundation for a world where it would be ‘normal’ for tentacle gods to interact with mortals. There are some nods to Lovecraft, of course, but I took a l lot of inspiration from a film called Cast a Deadly Spell that was based on Lovecraft’s works – which if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend. It’s a wonderful little hidden gem.
Once I had the religion set up, the overall plot for the series really came together. I already have the ending all planned out, and I can’t wait to get there. Just thinking about it makes me cackle, but don’t worry! It will be a happy ending! I promise! I only write happy endings, even if there are some bumps here and there. Readers will get to meet a lot of different characters along the way, including more tentacle gods like Azaethoth the Lesser, and I really hope they enjoy it.
Book Gemz: How did you come up with the title?
Kat: I absolutely love puns, and I wanted to do something that would immediately tell the reader what the feel of this book is – it’s funny, a little sexy, and full of tentacles. The titles for the other books in this series are also puns, and I can’t wait to share them all.
Book Gemz: Do you have a favorite character and/or book you’ve written? Who, what and why?
Kat: Azaethoth the Lesser, the tentacle god in this new book, and because he’s so much fun to write. He’s so stubborn and ridiculous, and he really doesn’t understand why everyone isn’t just worshipping him right now. He is definitely a character that I have no control over, and I have no idea what’s going to pop out of his mouth or what kinda mischief he’s going to get into. But beneath all of that ego and snark, he really has a huge heart. He wants to love and be loved so badly, and it was so satisfying to write him falling for Sloane and getting his happily ever after.
Book Gemz: Do you get emails asking why characters didn’t get together and whether you’re going to write more about them?
Kat: I’m pretty good about giving everyone their happy ending together, but I do get emails about whether or not I’m going to write more for certain characters. I love those kinds of messages because it means so much to me that someone out there loved my guys enough to want to read more about them.
Book Gemz: Do you have any advice for other writers?
Kat: Never give up and research your publishers. Hell, research the whole submission process before you try to get out there. I first tried to get published over a decade ago and failed pretty spectacularly. Looking back now, I understand that a lot of the reasons why were because I had no idea what I was doing. I was sending erotica to very mainstream publishers just because they had some open calls, I didn’t understand the difference between a synopsis and a summary, and I sure as hell had no idea how to properly write a query letter. Also, don’t send demon smut to a children’s publisher. Definitely don’t do that.
Book Gemz: Do you write often? Is it on a schedule, or whenever you feel like it?
Kat: I write every chance I get – which is usually on a break, in the bathroom, or when I should be sleeping! I have three children under five, and I work full-time, sometimes fifty hours a week or more, and it’s very difficult to make time to write. When I do have some free time, I can usually write fairly quickly because I’ve been plotting away what I want to do while I wait for the chance!
Book Gemz: What are your writing and personal goals for 2020 and beyond?
Kat: To keep writing as much as I can!
Book Gemz: If you were able to quit your day job and write full time, would you, and why/why not?
Kat: Without hesitation. Although I love what I do for a living, it doesn’t give me the same joy or satisfaction as writing does. That’s a whole other level of happiness. I’ve wanted to be a writer for all of my life, and I love being able to tell stories that take readers to some new and awesome places. Being able to do it professionally now is a freakin’ dream come true, and I really do hope that I will be able to do it full-time one day.
Who would you like to see…
Book Gemz: If your book was turned into a movie (we could all only hope). Who would you like to see play your main characters?
Kat: It’s the ultimate dream for any writer, right? My GOSH, I actually think about this all the time, and I already know exactly who would play Sloane – Zachary Quinto, without a doubt. The little jokes about Sloane’s magnificent eyebrows are in honor of Zachary. I’ve loved him ever since Heroes, and he will always be my Sloane. Azaethoth is a little harder because he has such a huge personality and he’s such a mess, but I think I would choose Michael Fassbender. I’ve watched him in interviews, and he’s absolutely hilarious, so I think he could definitely pull off a spoiled brat of a god.
Book Gemz: Is there anyone else you would like to see involved in your movie?
Kat: As either a director or a producer, I would love for Guillermo del Toro to be involved. His visuals are absolutely breathtaking, and that man knows how to make some beautiful monsters. When I picture certain scenes inside my head, it’s definitely very dark and gorgeous and weird, and I really can’t imagine any other person who could make that come to life.

Coffee Talk with K.L. Heirs
My little blog has a coffee sub-theme to it. Personally, I blame it on being a father of 3 young kiddos that I have adopted, BUT it is really because I have a hard time putting down a good book to go to sleep. Given this, I have a tradition to reach out to all the authors I review to get and share some insight on their caffeinated beverage choices…Kat was awesome to respond!
“Energy drinks and soda are my favorites for caffeine crazes. I’ve never been much on coffee unless it’s in ice cream form, but I do love a cold glass of sweet tea. When I’m really dragging or need some extra oomph though, I’m freakin’ downing Mountain Dew and Monsters. There is a Monster coffee flavor called “Mean Bean” that I swear is just like drinking liquid velvet. It’s vanilla and rich and smooth and agh, that’s probably my splurge drink because it’s very sweet, and I can’t drink but so much at a time. One day when I’m accepting my Oscar for writing the Acsquidentally In Love script, I will be sure to thank Monster energy drinks for getting me through all the weeks of sleepless editing!”
